Application of Microsoft Word table borders and shadows

Today we will learn how to apply table borders and shadows in Word 2010. Microsoft Word allows you to place borders on any or all four sides of a table, much like text, paragraphs, and pages. You can also add shadows to table rows and columns.

This chapter will teach you how to add borders (left, right, top, or bottom) around a table, and how to add different shadows to different rows and columns of a table.

Add borders to tables

The following steps will help you add borders to table cells available in Word documents.

Step 1 − Select the table you want to add border to. To select a table, click anywhere on the table, which will make the cross icon visible in the upper left corner of the table. Click the cross icon to select a table.

Step 2 − Click the Border button to display a list of options to place a border around the selected table. You can select any of the available options by simply clicking on it.

Step 3 – Try adding and removing different borders like left, right, top or bottom by choosing different options from border options.

Step 4 − You can apply border to any selected row or column. You can try it yourself.

Step 5 − To remove the existing border, just select no border option from the border options.

Use border options

You can add a border of your choice to the word list by following the simple steps given below.

Step 1 − Click the Border button to display a list of options for placing the border. Select the border and shadow options available at the bottom of the options list, as shown in the screenshot above. This will bring up a Borders and Shading dialog. This dialog can be used to set borders and shadows around the selected table.

Step 2 − Click on the Borders tab; this will display a list of border settings, styles and options, whether this border should be applied to a table or text or paragraph.

Step 3 − You can use the Preview section to disable or enable the left, right, top or bottom borders of the selected table or row or column. Design the border to your liking by following the given instructions in the preview section itself.

Step 4 − You can customize the border by setting the color, width of the border using different width thicknesses available under the styles section.

Add shadow to table

The following steps will help you to add shadow on the selected table or its row or column.

Step 1 – Select the row or column to which you want to apply the selected shade.

Step 2 − Click the Border button to display a list of options for placing the border. Select the Border and Shading option at the bottom of the options list. This will bring up a Borders and Shading dialog. This dialog can be used to set borders and shadows around selected rows or columns.

Step 2 – Click on the “Shadow” tab, which will display options for choosing fill, color, and style, and whether this border should be applied to the cell or table, or the selected portion of text.

Step 3 – You can use the Preview section to get an idea of ​​what to expect. When done, click the OK button to apply the results.
